Charles J. Vopička
& the 2018 Czecho/Slovak Centennial

Charles J. Vopička, President of Atlas Brewing Company in Chicago, was appointed by President Woodrow Wilson to serve on behalf of the United States to Romania, Bulgaria, and Serbia 1913 to 1920.

This is the story of the progression of Anna Cooková's research from Cook County Archives, to Declassified State Department Files at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. to the Historical Archives of the President of the Czech Republic, and back to Wisconsin’s own University of Wisconsin Historical Archives in Madison to find his connection to Wisconsin’s own 16th Lieutenant Governor, Charles Jonas, who also served on behalf of the United States abroad, both of whom were “Bohemian”, a part of modern day Czech Republic.

Anna Cooková is currently President of the not-for-profit organization Wisconsin Czechs, Inc. and owner and founder of CzechTalk.com. Anna Cooková has been teaching Czech Language & Culture in Czech-American communities around the US since February of 2009 as well as translating old family letters and journals and helping people get in contact with living relatives in the Czech Republic.

She has been involved with both of Wisconsin’s cities, Rice Lake & Two Rivers, that have a Czech Sister-City, including being on a delegation from both cities. She is a Registered Court Interpreter and is able to help people with visa and immigration paperwork.
