A Day of Thanksgiving or a Day of Mourning: A Social History of the Harvest Festival of 1621 in Plymouth

with Kathryn Bush

Thanksgiving today is over four centuries in the making, and has evolved from a harvest celebration to a controversial holiday. We’ll explore some of the many myths surrounding this holiday, examine some of the controversy, and will explore the likely menu of the 1621 Harvest Celebration (aka, the First Thanksgiving) recipes from a typical Wampanoag fall meal which might have been served in 1621, as well as a traditional Yankee corn pudding popular during the classic New England Thanksgiving dinner several centuries later. This presentation is primarily based on the seminal work of James W. Baker, former director of research at Plymouth Plantation. Even if your ancestors did not come over on the Mayflower, this presentation will help you have a better understanding of this complex American holiday. DCAGS member, Kathryn Bush will provide this online presentation at 11am on November 9th.

Kathryn Bush is a life-long genealogist. She is the fortunate owner of very old family heirlooms, and has always been interested in the social history of her ancestors.

This presentation will NOT be recorded - Mark your calendars for unique, one-time presentation!
